Sandie Gillis
Sandie Oreta Gillis is a writer, cultural advocate, and supporter of Philippine arts and heritage. She earned a degree in Broadcast Communication from the University of the Philippines and co-hosted a radio talk show at Radio Veritas in Manila before relocating to Canada in 1983. Since then, she has dedicated herself to cross-cultural storytelling and promoting Filipino identity through the arts. Her deep commitment to cultural preservation is evident in her literary work. She co-authored SYM: The Power of Struggle with Alfredo Roces, chronicling the life and artistry of Sofronio Y. Mendoza (SYM), a pivotal figure in modern Philippine art. Through this journey, she was inspired by the legacy of the Dimasalang artists—a group recognized for their dedication to artistic excellence and mentorship within the Filipino diaspora. This experience fueled her commitment to preserving and sharing the Dimasalang story with broader audiences. She also authored Weaving Our Dreams: The Tboli People of the Philippines, a vivid portrayal of the traditions and resilience of the Tboli Indigenous community. Through her work, Sandie continues to honour the diverse cultural narratives of the Philippines and foster pride among Filipino communities in Canada and beyond.
