Jess Hipolito
Jess Hipolito was born in 1944 in the Philippines and earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Far Eastern University in 1970. In 1972, he moved to Richmond, British Columbia, where he built a career with various architectural firms while nurturing his passion for illustration and calligraphy.
Enchanted by the wharves, harbours, and canneries of Canada’s coastal landscapes, Jess captures their charm through his oil and watercolour paintings. His background in architecture and illustration is reflected in his detailed and expressive work, which gives his art a distinct and personal style. Alongside his Canadian landscapes, he often draws inspiration from fond memories of the Philippines, creating nostalgic countryside scenes that convey his deep connection to his homeland.
Jess shares a long-standing friendship with Sofronio Y. Mendoza (SYM), the founder of the Dimasalang Artist Group. In his younger years, he actively participated in the group’s life drawing sessions, plein air painting, and numerous exhibitions. Now in his senior years, Jess continues to find joy in painting, often capturing the beauty of his surroundings from the comfort of his home.
